On Saturday, June 25th, NBA player Ben Simmons’s cousin was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver around 3:30 A.M. in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Zachary Simmons’s body was propelled into the back of a parked vehicle and was pronounced dead at 4:25 A.M. He was only 21 years old.
Zachary had gone to the draft in Brooklyn last Thursday, June 23rd, where his 19-year-old cousin was selected first by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Zachary’s mother said that he had been walking back from a friend’s birthday party when the incident occurred.
Ben Simmons Tweeted, “I’m glad I could share this moment in my life with you. Rest in peace Cuzzo Much love Zachary Simmons #rip,” later that day.
His mother, Monique Steele, told CBS 2, “To be speeding enough to kill my child is beyond me.”
It’s horrible,” Jesse Bradshaw told ABC 7. “It makes me emotional. Why do people drive like that? Guys get hit by cars like twice a week. People need to slow down.”
Police are currently searching for the hit-and-run driver, who was driving a black SUV, such as a Yukon, Tahoe, or Escalade with New York plates, and anyone with information on the case is asked to call The Hudson County Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit or Hoboken Police Department.
