Jonathan Astaphan, 29, and Liza Angulo, 17, were killed in a car accident in Miami on I-75 at around 11:30 on Thursday, June 28. Astaphan’s 25 year old passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Reports indicate that Astaphan hit a tractor trailer as it was pulling out from Pines Blvd onto I-75 southbound. The top of his car was sheared off, and continued on for several hundred meters beyond the truck after traveling underneath it. A second truck then struck the tractor-trailer’s right side, causing the its cargo of concrete barriers to topple onto Angulo’s car, killing her.

The tractor-trailer’s driver is under investigation to ensure that all proper procedures were followed and that the cargo was appropriately secured.

Angulo had just graduated from American Heritage High School in Plantation and had planned to attend Miami university in the fall. She was an excellent student, graduating with honors, and was to attend college on a scholarship.

Grief counselors have been made available for Liza’s devastated friends and classmates from American Heritage High School.
