The Texas Tyler Police Department reported that around 1 A.M. on a Sunday morning last month, 48 Chevys were stripped of their wheels, leaving the dealership with those vehicles sitting on blocks.
The police department investigation officers believe that the thieves cut the locks on the main gates, disabled the lot’s light system, and moved in a box truck. The thieves then jacked up the vehicles, removed the wheels and tires, and placed the vehicles down on wooden blocks.
Some of the vehicles were damaged in the process, and nuts and bolts laid scattered around the lot. At least the thieves were considerate enough to leave something behind. Most of the stolen wheels were 20 or 22 inch wheels, and some were “nothing out of the ordinary.” Regardless, David Bates, general manager of Peltier Chevrolet, estimated the value of the stolen wheels to total between $200,000 and $250,000.
Bates informed the police department that they would run a full safety inspection, get the wheels replaced, and that they have already contacted their insurance company.
Bates stated, “It’s rough, but we’ll get through it.”
